Noble deeds and hot baths are the best cures for depression.
--- Dodie Smith 1896
Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. --Oscar Wilde, De Profundis, 1905

"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. I saw movies, and I was the hero in the movie. So every dream I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times...I learned very early in life that: 'Without a song, the day would never end;
without a song, a man ain’t got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend - without a song.' So I keep singing a song. Goodnight. Thank you."
- Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

I envy things on which a price tag cannot be put. I envy anyone who can
do a backward somersault in midair from a standing position. I envy
people who speak foriegn languages easily...men who have fought a war
and survived. I envy people who can travel abroad with a single piece
of carry-on luggage. I envy people who have good posture...Above all, I
envy those few people who truly understand that life is a fragile
bargain, rescindable at any time by the other party and live their lives
accordingly."

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of
the most pleasant sensations in the world. You are
surrounded by adventure. You have no idea what is
in store for you, but you will, if you are wise and know
the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the
unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in
which the gods may offer it.

She crossed borders recklessly, refusing to recognize
limits, saying "bonjour" and "buon giorno" as though
she owned both France and Italy and the day itself. . .
She was free to grasp it all: to bite into fruit that had
ripened on other people's trees; to warm herself in
the sun they had hung out.

"My importance to the world is relatively small. On the other
hand, my importance to myself is tremendous. I am all I have
to work with, to play with, to suffer and to enjoy. It is not
the eyes of others that I am wary of, but of my own. I do not
intend to let myself down more than I can possibly help, and
I find that the fewer illusions I have about myself or the
world around me, the better company I am for myself."

"If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like
Michelangelo painted pictures, like Shakespeare wrote poetry, like
Beethoven composed music; sweep streets so well that all the host of
Heaven and Earth will have to pause and say, "Here lived a great
sweeper, who swept his job well."

Love is patient.
Love is kind.
It does not envy.
It does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered.
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
--1 Corinthians 13
