Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. --Oscar Wilde, De Profundis, 1905

"Friends are like television. Some are like PBS and always asking for money. Others are like the news, with sad tales to tell everyday, some are like that one station with the foreing language; you don't understand a word of it but you listen and watch anyway. And then there are the ones like the commercials, always changes, ever-so-annoying and only seem to be there when you are bored. But every once and a while you meet someone who's like a really good movie of the week or that one tv show you hardly ever get to see anymore because you're so busy. My point is hold on to the friends you care about and since we don't have a remote control to mute someone or just change the channel, pick your friends carefully."
"After awhile you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security, And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises, And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child, And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for paths. After awhile you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So plant your garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure... That you really are strong, And you really do have worth."

I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just idiots.
I've learned. . . that we don't have to change friends if we understand that
friends change.I've learned. . . that no matter how good a friend is, they're
going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in
others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden
patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain
too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives
everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that
can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis
the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and
whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto
death."

"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. I saw movies, and I was the hero in the movie. So every dream I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times...I learned very early in life that: 'Without a song, the day would never end;
without a song, a man ain’t got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend - without a song.' So I keep singing a song. Goodnight. Thank you."
- Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

I envy things on which a price tag cannot be put. I envy anyone who can
do a backward somersault in midair from a standing position. I envy
people who speak foriegn languages easily...men who have fought a war
and survived. I envy people who can travel abroad with a single piece
of carry-on luggage. I envy people who have good posture...Above all, I
envy those few people who truly understand that life is a fragile
bargain, rescindable at any time by the other party and live their lives
accordingly."

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of
the most pleasant sensations in the world. You are
surrounded by adventure. You have no idea what is
in store for you, but you will, if you are wise and know
the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the
unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in
which the gods may offer it.

She crossed borders recklessly, refusing to recognize
limits, saying "bonjour" and "buon giorno" as though

She was free to grasp it all: to bite into fruit that had
ripened on other people's trees; to warm herself in
the sun they had hung out.

"My importance to the world is relatively small. On the other
hand, my importance to myself is tremendous. I am all I have
to work with, to play with, to suffer and to enjoy. It is not
the eyes of others that I am wary of, but of my own. I do not
intend to let myself down more than I can possibly help, and
I find that the fewer illusions I have about myself or the
world around me, the better company I am for myself."

Love is patient.
Love is kind.
It does not envy.
It does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered.
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

"Too often we are scared. Scared of what we might not be able to do. Scared of what people might think if we tried. We let fears stand in the way of our hopes. We say no when we want to say yes. We sit quietly when we want to scream. And we shout with the others, when we should keep our mouths shut. Why? After all, we do only go around once. There's really no time to be afraid. JUST DO IT."

We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self

I have abandoned my search for truth and am now looking for a good fantasy.

Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would
know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a
great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you
must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I
can clearly not choose the wine in front of me...

" Don't worry about what other people think because all that matters is your
happiness. Don't look for comebacks because your enemy will always have one
more waiting for you. Don't judge yourself by your face and especially what

What I point out to people is that it's silly to be afraid
that you're not going to get what you want if you ask.
Because you are already not getting what you want. They
always laugh about that because they realize it's so true.
Without asking you already have failed, you already have
nothing. What are you afraid of? You're afraid of getting
what you already have! It's ridiculous! Who cares if you
don't get it when you ask for it, because, before you ask
for it, you don't have it anyway. So there's really nothing
to be afraid of.

What happens when you let your mind wander? Studies have
shown when a human mind has nothing specific to think about,
it becomes chaotic, flitting from one thought to another in
a random way. That's why studies show that people are more
often in a good mood while working than they are in their
free time.

The most beautiful people I have known
are those who have known defeat,
known suffering, know struggle, known loss
and have found their way out of the depths.
These people have an appreciation, a sensitivity,
and an understanding of life that fills them
with compassion and a deep loving concern.
Beautiful people do not just happen.
